whipped cottage cheese

This whipped cottage cheese recipe is an easy, delicious high-protein snack. It comes together in under 5 minutes: just add cottage cheese to a food processor with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and a pinch of salt. With a couple of pulses, the curds in the cottage cheese disappear. You end up with a creamy, tangy, silky-smooth dip that’s perfect for scooping up with crackers and veggies.

It’s been on repeat in my kitchen lately. I love blending it up on the weekend so that I have a grab-and-go snack on hand during the week, and it’s also a great last-minute appetizer for impromptu entertaining. This summer, whenever I’ve had guests, I’ve set out this whipped cottage cheese with fresh farmers market vegetables. So simple, so tasty, and always a hit!

Why You’ll Love This Whipped Cottage Cheese

  • So long, lumpy texture! I’m not a fan of cottage cheese’s curdled texture. But when you whip it in the food processor, it becomes light, fluffy, and smooth, similar to sour cream or Greek yogurt.
  • Bring on the protein. One ~1/2-cup serving of this recipe packs in 13 grams of protein. Paired with veggies for dipping, it’s the ultimate healthy snack!
  • It’s super easy to make. All you need are 5 minutes and 5 simple ingredients!

How to Make Whipped Cottage Cheese

You can find the complete whipped cottage cheese recipe with measurements at the bottom of this post. For now, here’s an overview of how it goes:

1. Add all the ingredients to a food processor—the cottage cheese, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and salt.

  • Ingredient note: I like this recipe best with full-fat cottage cheese (5%+), as it has the richest flavor. 2% works too. I’d avoid fat-free cottage cheese, which will create a flatter flavor and less creamy texture.

2. Pulse until smooth and creamy. If the cheese doesn’t look smooth right away, keep pulsing! Don’t hesitate to process for a minute or more to get it completely smooth.

3. Season to taste, adding more garlic, salt, and/or lemon juice, if desired.

That’s it!

No food processor? No problem. You can make this recipe in the blender too. The mixture is thick, so stop and stir or scrape down the sides of the blender as needed. I also recommend mincing the garlic before you blend so that it incorporates evenly with the other ingredients.

How to Serve Whipped Cottage Cheese

My favorite way to serve this whipped cottage cheese is as a dip. If I’m making it as an appetizer, I always dress it up with garnishes before serving. I love it with a drizzle of olive oil, lemon zest, red pepper flakes, and fresh herbs like parsley, dill, or chives on top.

Crackers, pita chips, crostini, and veggies are all great for dipping. Some of my go-to veggies are cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, carrots, peppers, snap peas, celery, and radishes.

Other ways to serve it: spread it on toast or sandwiches, dollop it on grain bowls, serve it like sour cream with zucchini fritters, corn fritters, baked potatoes, and more

Make-Ahead and Storage Tips

This whipped cottage cheese dip keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It can separate in the fridge, so if any liquid pools on top, just give it a good stir before serving.

If you make it ahead for a gathering, wait to add any garnishes until right before you eat. Enjoy!
