Reservations! Although this is an old joke, this year it’s true. I’ll be far away from my mom and my kids as I attend a work event.

I would love a Middle Eastern dinner. Falafel, tomato onion salad, couscous, pitas, and hummus. Knaffe for dessert. Mmmmm

I’d love it if my kids made me pancakes. Not sure if I can teach the five month old to crack eggs, though.

I’m going to make some of my mom and mother in law’s favorite dishes, strata and blueberry scones. I lost my mom unexpectedly in January and my mother in law a month later. Miss them both so much.

I’m expecting a baby any day now… but if I’m STILL pregnant on Mother’s Day I’ll probably make biscuits while my 2 year old sits on the counter and “helps”. 🙂 I’m so glad he’s taken an interest in my love of cooking! Making biscuits is one of our favorite things.

I would love to bake white chocolate chip scones to pamper myself on mother’s day for a morning breakfast with a fresh cup of coffee (latte), and naan and paneer butter masala for lunch. (My little princess sure would help me with both cooking and eating!)

I’m making a bagel brunch spread for my mom and my SIL, with local awesome bagels, egg salad (my moms favorite – I use celery salt, a tip from the ladies at Canal House) and all kinds of toppings (avocado for me!) and fruit salad. Then an angel food cake with macerated strawberries (also my moms favorite). It’s more or less the same thing we had last year, which was also her homecoming to her new apartment that I found and fixed up for her to return to after being in a rehab facility following her stroke. So we are celebrating her major progress since then and her new lease on life.

Although my mother has been gone for 11 years, I honor her throughout the year by cooking her favorite meals, choose to apply a lipstick color she loved, or wear a piece of her jewelry. I even sprtiiz myself with one of her perfumes before embracing the day.
She is always part of my daily life. She died on Mother’s Day weekend, so this is not the easiest of times for me. I will make a meal this year with her love for Italian food, with a vegan twist – lasagna with vegetables and cashew cheese.
